Waving a few American flags does not replicate the symbolism the May day parade displays. The two are not comparable, in any way.
Now, a parade with flags but without Tanks, then that is something closer.
Tradition? Of course it is traditional. A celebration of victory over the Nazi`s could easily be toasted by a representation of the units involved, just the people, not the hardware. The addition of the hardware is unnecessary in terms of remembrance alone. Cultural differences?
The hardware displays a firm message, thinly veiled amongst the flags and wreath laying. The parade seems firmly double edged to me and always has been.
