Adams I think the authors name was but I can't for the life of me find his book on my shelves (some hippie friend probably nicked it) nor remember his first name or the title of his book.
You got the first letter right. It was Richard Alpert later known as Ram Das in his book Be Here Now. If you recall he was the other reseacher who along with Timothy Leary was fired by Harvard for conducting LSD research using themselves as subjects, among other things.
