uhm the main supply from that flight were pumping machines which of best of my knowledge were in dire need at the moment. That the US has enough food to supply it (and only getting it to the right places is the issue) was out of question. The main reason (so was I told by him) was that they also sended food, tents & similar stuff was that everything is already completly packed and it would have taken more time to send only the important stuff like the pumps.
The pumps were later used (when the last flight was finally there) that it took them month to get them into shape again.
(All this is mostly based on the stories I got told by one of the involved Person, and it are atleast two years since he told me them, so details might be wrong, but I am pretty sure to remember the most important parts, since I asked several times if he is kidding)
