Harry Turtledove wrote a work of fiction titled "The Two Georges", in which (George) Washington successful petitions the King (George) to redress their grievances. Among other things this results in the NAU (North American Union) of Canada and the US. Set in the 1960's it's an interesting read if just for the "what if?".
