Popular Mechanics magazine had an article on it back in the 50's or 60's showing a photo of a wood mock up to demonstrate manueverability and an artist's rendering of a mechanic (wearing a hard hat) carrying a V-8 engine block with one hand like a tray of beers.

But technology has had to catch up. There was also the law of the conservation of energy that had to be considered. If you mechanically enhanced a joint to be super strong, it also becomes super SLOW. Hydraulics are a different thing, but require a pump for pressure, special rotating units for joints like elbows, shoulders, wrists, hips, knees and ankles and a big roll of paper towels to clean up after all the gasket leaks.
