Tanks are in reality mobile armored artillery for line-of-sight targets and will always be in demand because of their mobility, armor protection and accuracy of its main gun.
But tanks are also a prime target. An enemy with an RPG on his shoulder would rather aim at a tank than a Hummvee or a deuce-and-a-half full of MRE's.
Since we already have pilotless "combat" aircraft (though not really fighters - yet), getting the human crew out of the tank and operating it from something like a video arcade console is the next step up.
The time is coming, soon, that all combat aircraft and close-in ground fighting vehicles will actually be remotely controlled (perhaps SELF controlled in some cases) robots.
Now, if they only duplicate an Infantryman.
