i don't doubt that, but the question remains if that is a valid thought.

heck, even pledging allegiance to the flag is also a relatively new thing too does that mean lincoln and TR were unpatriotic?

wearing the flag lapel, or holding the hand over the heart- these are "low-meaning" indicators of patriotism. it doesn't mean very much if you do it (nixon did it, and he made a mockery of the office of the president and the US, as an instance). yet NOT doing such a thing, it raises questions. sort of irrational.

there's actually another lesser known instance of this. the phrase "god bless america" to end a speech. bush and clinton and reagan used this phrase quite often- but guess whom started this trend?
