I am not suprised that we're inviting the French to build new nuclear power plants in the UK. 80% of the UK's existing nuclear workforce is due to retire before long with no home grown replacement. Add to the burden of decommissioning many of the existing reactors which are coming to the end of their lives there is a skills shortage that will drive up costs.
Successive UK governments have seen no value to keeping inefficient and uncompetitive heavy industry but have encouraged a service economy. It's known that the uptake of engineering and science university degrees by UK students has fallen to an all time low over the last decade.
