The “Fist-in-a-mouth““things happened and were quite common. My co-worker served 1988-1990 in MVD troops (interior forces), he told me that the first time the troops were on shooting range, officers were kneeling on Central Asian soldiers backs just in case they would turn their AK-s to other direction and start shooting their mockers. Another friend of mine served in Strategic Missile Forces in Siberia early 80-s and the stories are much more terrible/unbelievable and so on. On my local mil.-forum there is 20-page thread of “memories from Sov.Army“. Some of this is unbelievable even for me, and I“ve heard plenty.
And Firral wrote about Sov.system , where the first military training started in high-school and university. But in university the exams (to get your compulsory 1-st lieutenant papers) could be bought with a couple of bottles of Armenian Cognac. BUT this was our part, the situation in Russia , where the Sov.Military had much higher respect, could have been much different.
As one major in our Army wrote - it was up to you to decide what you did with your time - play assclown, torment someone , just “stay under radar“or try to get something useful out of it.
