It's because we elect the leader of our government or rather electors where as western Europe elects a Parliament that makes that choice for the most part. If you looked at our Senate campaigns they'd probably be a bit more subdued. Plus in the USA you have a tremendous concentration of wealth so those individuals have lots of $ to throw around.
