Also, according to my research using Wiki data for gasoline tax here:

and my personal records of gasoline prices where I live (actually one of the places with cheaper gas price in CA), taxes comprise roughly 22% of the cost of gasoline.

Wiki data is from 2007-07-25. My personal records show gasoline prices at that time was around $2.85.

$0.63/$2.85 = 22.1%

I still say if our government really cared about easing people's pain at the gas pump, kill gas taxes. Of course that's not possible. Let's pass some laws to tax oil companies to help out the folks. How that works I have no idea.
