Quite a few people can visualize this (I'm not one of them) but the math works.

I can't remember if I ever studied the methodologies to find the shortest distance but there are ways to avoid the longest distance.

Actually, this methodology explains alot, especially Enstineian definitions of gravity. Imagine a flat piece of paper. Drop a rock in the middle of it. Anything on the edges automatically goes towards to rock. Essentially, any mass will warp space, ie the 4th dimension.
