Sir, get ready for a new round there. If it goes as badly as predicted we'll need every available Euro-troop to handle that lovely mess.
Meanwhile I fear for those little girls. Our temporal conditioning is a mirage that will leave them exposed as the first examples when the Taliban return. Sadly, the pashtu tribal structure is pre-disposed to salafi wahabbist tendencies, I suspect.

"Technically we never had control of the area, and no presence pre 911 - It will not be considered "giving up FATA" by a lot of people, but a restoration of their "autonomy". The immediate aftermath to such a move would justify the decision, as attacks cease - and it will be hailed by many as a "victory" from a "political solution" - and ignored will be the fact that the ideology we face only sees victory by spreading its hate everywhere."
Beautifully expressed.
Let's face it. It was a cheap buffer from enemies to your north and west. Pashtunistan's practical freedom was the "nod and a wink". In return, little was invested by the GoP in these regions. That was the quid pro quo. Required to assert it's sovereignty over these peoples, Pakistan may yet abdicate control of the region rather than fight.
It's too late, though. Any "victory" from a "political solution" will be akin to "peace in our time". The war's leaving the hills, seeping into Pakistan's valleys and cities. Pakistan will soon be fighting for it's nat'l survival.
