I think it's a stroke of genius.

There are a lot of christians who are fed up with the overly secular nature of the current political climate. Most christians are good people who just "turn the other cheek" and try not to make waves. The few that do make the news are usually crazy people.

Huckabee is a religious man and he's not gonna hide it like he's ashamed of his religion. Who other than christians in the west are afraid to show their beliefs? No one.

He needed to differentiate himself from the rest of the line up. He did exactly that. He had nothing to lose. It's a gamble that worked.
