Hebrew is obviously a plus.

Nowadays, even if both your parents are citizens, if you aren't you can join.

You can still serve 3 years. You can serve more if you want. You can extend your service from 18 months to pretty much as much as you like. That's what I'm doing. Going through mahal however, will assure that you don't get put into a crappy unit as a jobnik. If you're a citizen it can happen, and you got no say about it. Your options or benefits from getting citizenship are not affected by service.
