That's pretty much what I gathered too thus far, with reading on the web a little and from this thread. From your list of 5, at least, I have the world's support for #1 and #3. I'm a big fan of the government butting out of non-government business. Some social programs are not really the business of government, including social security as we know it; sure, it began well-intentioned, but with the bureaucracy we came to know as SSA, it's not nearly as efficient as we want it to be. Similar lines goes to the whole gay marriage issue -- since when is the happiness of gay people the business of the government?
I'm not sure if I agree with Paul's #4 and #5 as you described, though. If that's really what he thinks, then someone needs to remind him that it's not 1915 anymore.
