Not to mention covering the landscape in windfarms. I also wonder about two geographically distant, yet related issues, big game and fox hunting. Game parks have to cull any way so why not receive revenue? Fox hunting whilst not my cup of tea, has been replaced by bait - no good for the countryside.
The eighties saw the clash between catalyser and lean burn in the UK. The former my be ideal for the US where journey times alow the device to warm up. The UK however has FAR shorter journey times with the result that fuel efficiency is reduced whilst harmful emissions skyrocket due to the cold cat. .
A person favourite is the Brussels directive banning the use of mercury in thermometers and other scientific instruments. Then conventional light bulbs are to be banned, replaced by low energy ones. Made using mercury. From a couple of kilos a year mercury use shoots up to dozens of tons.

Lead in church organ pipes? Forget it. Lead/acid batteries for fleets of recycling mini-vans fine.
