This is experience talking here. My then SSM/now RSM knew the Col was not going to check. He's going to have his hands full as it was. We were a battlegroup doing a brigade group exercise. I had a troop trying to do a regt's job. and the Col wanted us to lay a bridge BEHIND us. The only way the Col was going to learn about that was if he ordered a general retreat but that would screw up the rest of the exercise.

What would really get his attention would be that we didn't penetrate the minefield or we didn't set up the proper protection for the guns. A brdige no one is going to use is going to get ignored.
