Picking a president from the best the country has to offer in the way of character and brains would only work in an absolute monarchy where the ruler's word is law and woe to those who disobey. In a democracy there are so many competing points of view on what ought to be done that the only way to get anything done is through compromise. The kind of person you'd like to see in the presidency wouldn' stand a chance unless he or she resorted to compromise, and then you'd be right back where you started from: being fed up and wishing we could just pick the best person for the job.
As for the campaign nonsense, I agree with you. It hardly seems more than an ad campaign for competing toothpastes.

We would have to do the same thing for congress as well. Untill the two big parties are broken up, the U.S. is doomed to slowly going under and falling as a world power. Compromise is one thing but a goverment run by either of the two extremes/ big money, just is not going to survive in the long haul. Secondly, as we have seen time and time again compromising is not what either party currently does. What we need in office are honest, intelligent people who are willing to make the hard choices to do what is best for the country and we have not had those people in a long time. I say lets get back to the ideals that made this country great.
