"Even in the wealthy provinces, PLA slots are highly sought after, as they are viewed as pathways to to wealth and prestige (as defenders of the ancestral lands)."

More likely because they are great positions to get rich by being corrupt. Buying military license plates is a great way to avoid speeding tickets these days, and if I started listing all of the things I have heard the PLA accused of I would be here all night.

The PLA still occupies a place in the heart of the CHinese public(their help during natural disasters being especially approved of), but I dont see how that would matter at all if an invasion of Taiwan went poorly. Other than making the public upset at the wasted lives. I still maintain that the Taiwanese would be stupid to attack the mainland.

The Taiwanese best bet is to try to make an invasion so costly in terms of money and casualties that the Chinese government would lose public support. Attacking the mainland would be counterproductive. Thats all Im trying to say.
