I agree with you that China has a great capacity to absorb casulaties, but China today is very different from CHina in the 1950s when they last really got into it with someone. For all of the efforts that the government has made at censorship, the internet has ensured that outside news sources are pretty available. Families of infantrymen from Hunan would probably be big supporters of a war no matter what happened. Its the opinion of the middle class in the coastal provinces that could be a big political problem for the government in a war. Missile strikes on Shanghai or any of the other cities on the coast could bring this powerful class of people who are largely very skeptical of the government around to support it. It would be a huge political victory for the CHinese government.
