Halsey also wasn't fully aware of the extent that the IJN Carrier Air Wings had been crippled. the IJN Carriers were still considered a very serious threat. That most of the Carrier capable pilots were attrited during the Solomons campaign and that the Japanese training programs weren't upto the same calibre as the US equivelants wasn't known, for certain. Also all of Halsey's available intel said that Kurita's force was retiring, and the southern force had been obliterated by the 'Pearl Harbor' Battlewagons.

Personally I would have left a task force of three of the Iowa Battleships (Halsey himself was on one of them and therefore it had to go), any others BB's in the area a screening force. And Halsey actually planned for this, until he was informed that Kurtia had retired, and then he saw no need. His intell from the pilots alos indicated that the Musashi was far more wounded than was actually the case. Remember Snipe Hindsite is 20/20 I would have left a TF behind but thats only because I'm very paraniod, given the same intel Halsey had I would have raced after the IJN carriers with my Carrier TFs also.
