Sniper is confusing two battles, Savo Island-1942 and Leyte Gulf-1944.
Sorry Ross, go do your homework for this, I'm not recounting history when others have prepared it better than I.
Savo Island:

Leyte Gulf:

In short the Japanese never pressed home an advantage after Midway. At Savo Island they wiped out the US (and one Aussie) blocking force that were protecting the marines supply ships, but withdrew without getting the supply ships.
At Leyte Gulf they decoyed Admiral Halsey away from from protecting the landing area. The story and victory at Leyte Gulf is romantic because it was the last battleship confrontation in the world. But the heros and victors were the destroyers and small escort carriers that made the IJN think they were fighting a fleet.
