What idiot compiled this list. No Sydney, no Paris, and Moscow gets in ahead of St Petersburg. Personally I refused to vote.
Even though I am from melbourne, and thus a blood enemy of the harbour city, Sydney on a sunny day takes a world of beating.
Venice & Florence are gorgeous & leave Rome for dead (though I do take the point on the Vatican.
Hue in Vietnam is beautiful in a strange way. Wedged in between the mountains & the sea with a lovely river running through it, yet enclosed (the old bit anyway) by a giant crumbling fortress. Quite the setting.
Kanchanaburi in Western Thailand is more a town than a river, but it has setting to burn. It stretches out along the Kwae River (yes, thats the Kwai to us [i]farangs[i]) with spectacular mountains seeming to hug the far bank
I'll also pitch in a vote for Paris, even if those lovely wide boulevards were primarily to ensure that any potential revolutionaries would be shredded by grapeshot without any damage to the nice buildings.
In the US I think New York is stunning, especially if approached by sea. San Francisco did the same trick as Sydney & grabbed a great location (though not as good visually). My one out of the hat is Washington D.C. The monumental architecture is everywhere and it is brilliantly laid out.
Lots of pretty places I haven't seen yet, but I'm off to Phnom Penh in 3 weeks, so I'll tell you how it stacks up.
