According to the media reports in the UK yesterday, the Amphibious Assault Flagship, HMS Albion (L14), is the first to be confirmed in the present round of cuts. She is to be taken out of front-line service and placed in "Extended Readiness", her crew will be allocated to other ships and her armament will be removed. Senior Royal Navy officials say that if the situation warranted it then the ship could be back in action "Within Weeks". An MoD spokesman said that they had no plans to take her out of service. The ?500m 14,600-ton ship only entered service in July 2003 and was the platform used by Tony Blair recently to give his speech at Devonport where he pledged to lift defence spending!

News from meetings between the MoD and Government indicate that the Royal Navy will get its long awaited decision to build the two new aircraft carriers. The trouble is that this will come at the expense of two, possibly four destroyers.
