Actually Dickie and I both live in Los Angeles County so you drove right by the area on the way to San Diego. I'm sure if you're in the area again you could probably talk RAF into meeting you for breakfast at Baker's Square.
It's been a while since I've been down San Diego way, used to like driving past North Island/Coronado to see which carriers were in and then traveling down a few more miles to the 32nd Street Naval Base. Since I spent a number of childhood years in National City and Chula Vista, all I had to do was walk to Broadway Ave and look Northwest to see the fleet. We used to go to a small commissary in a quansont hut in the early 1960's on Coronado literally in the shadows of the carriers.
