Algae is the way forward.. damn, I'd vote algae as the next UK PM.. probably work harder and get involved in fewer wars and probably less slimey as well... 
The only problems I can see are where to produce it... if we grow in desert areas (possibly using a salt-tolerant variety) the biggest problem will be environmentalists worrying about geckos and scorpions
