I read from various magazines about the re-issuing of the M-14 rifle. A lot of them were hauled out of various arsenals, cleaned up, dressed up with polymer stocks and front rails, and sent to the troops in the field. The open terrain of the Afghan mountains required something with more range than what the puny 5.56mm can offer. I guess the range also translates to punch through cinder blocks of Iraq.
