They can't even keep secret projects secret. They can't suppress pictures of prisoners in dog collars. The government so does not control the media, at least not here.

It was too dumb to answer. The West supported the Baath party to weaken the commies and Iran. To the best of my knowledge there have been no ties found to Saddam's seizure of power.
