Vancouver is overrated. The setting is splendid, but the built environment disappoints. What redeems the place is not what's been built, but what's not been built. Over time, even that negative virtue will be lost.
I think the prize should go to Paris. I know that's the conventional answer, but the conventional answer happens to be right.
Cairo isn't pretty, but once you learn how to cross the street, you can sort of get to like the place. It grows on you.
Amman in Jordan can be strikingly beautiful. I'll never forget my first sight of the city, approaching from the south on a sunny afternoon. Perched on hills, all the buildings finished with white brick or cement, Amman looks like the proverbial City of Light.
