It's probably because a lot of people don't want to join because of the "horror" stories they've heard about what DI's do to recruits at boot camp. So in that respect it will boost recruitment and graduation rates. However, will it make better soldiers?

Probably not. As somebody said, whoever flunks out of boot camp obviously isn't worth a **** at the front, so it helps to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.

However, I've known some guys who respected their DI's less because of the incessant shouting in-your-face mentality that the DI's had. They interpreted that behavior as stupidity, although they still obeyed orders, mostly out of fear. Those who were calmer, yet just as firm when it came to discipline, won more respect than the shouters, especially among the recruits who were more intelligent. Recruits under them performed their duties because they admired the man giving orders and in a sense of duty, rather than fear.

That's just what I've heard from some guys who have been in and out.
