During the American Civil War, a French officer asked a British counterpart why they wore red coats. "Don't you know it makes you an easy target?" He asked. The Brit answered "Yes, but this way, if the officer or a soldier gets shot, the color blends in with the coat and the men continue fighting without a loss of morale.
