This gives a different perspective than what I thought happened. I thought that they were totally unprepared and thoroughly lost and totally unprofessional.
Does anyone have any idea as to why did they not let the dam in the North be opened to inundate the Western side right down to Karbala? That would ensure delay as also make the western side safer. If indeed what the General says is correct, then the lack of troops would have been compensated to some extent. Of course, I am guesstimating since I dont know the gradient, the capacity of the dam and the soil content of the area that could be inundated.
