Until it is reformed fundamentally and respects the rights of individuals, it must be seen as at least as inimical to human progress as any other backward-looking, bigoted and sociopathic 'ism' we've ever had to fight against. |

If you'd like, when I'm done with it, I can post my final paper for my Islamic Law class on "Women's Rights and Iraqi Constitution." What is interesting about this topic is that Islam was actually very progressive for women at the time, giving them rights that they never had and elevating their status as property for which the father received payment at marriage to a person, all be it of lesser value than man as demonstrated by the double inheritance, double witness, and double compensation rules. Add to that a patriarichal society that has dominated the juristic history, and you have traditions that stand as a regressive example when compared to the strides women have made in modernity.
