I'm not as poo poo on religion as this; however, I find that many people treat religion as the end itself, i.e. I am Christian, ergo, I am good. I am Muslim, ergo, I am good. I am Jewish, ergo, I am good. etc. etc. For me, religion is a means to the end of being a good person.
For example, when I was getting married, my wife wanted to have the wedding in Old Town Alexandria. She got the name and number of the head priest at one of the churches through the secretary, and when she called him, the guy was a complete a$$. He may have been a man of the cloth, but he was a bigger dick than I have ever met in the military, where it's much more possible to be a tyrannical prick and get away with it (however, you tend not to be successful since your subordinates will do exactly what you tell them, and nothing else
).
So, I would tend to agree with Snipe in the sense that some use religion as an opiate instead of as an example.
