The Foxbats excelled at their designed role, they were great interceptors.
They however were not great air to air fighters. Against other fighters they generally were at a disadvantage due to their lack of maneuverability and their maximum g-load rating of 2.2 g's (when fully fueled). The airframe itself had an absolute g-load of 4.5'gs before it would breakup.
But much like the SR-71 they were phenominal aircraft in their day. And definitately could be considered a success by all accounts.
