A slight correction to your statement.

The most successful jet fighter ever designed evolved from a need to answer a mythical fighter plane that evolved to answer a cancelled bomber.

MiG 25 was thought to be a figher. Something that can turn in combat and do all sorts of maneuvers. It turned out to be a high speed missile platform, good in a straight line, not so good anywhere else.
