WASHINGTON (AFP) — Senator John McCain has won the Republican party's caucuses in Louisiana while longshot candidate Ron Paul took second place, the state party said Wednesday, citing preliminary results.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, a leading candidate for the Republican nomination, came in third, Louisiana Republican party Chairman Roger Villere said in a statement.

"I offer my congratulations Senator John McCain on his success in the Louisiana caucuses," Villere said in a statement.

"Senator McCain is an American hero and this is further evidence that he enjoys strong support in Louisiana and throughout the South," he said.

Villere did not release any figures from the caucuses held Tuesday evening, stressing that that the results were preliminary.

The Louisiana contest, however, is not a battleground state in the race for the Republican nomination as candidates have focused on bigger prizes in South Carolina and Florida.

I've been looking around, and I am curious about two things. First, why has no, and I mean no, major new network even remotely covered this?

Second, what effect does the caucus have on the delegates committed? From what I can tell the results allocate about 20 delegates (although one article in a local news medium said 24-40)... but there was no information on how they are distributed or how many each candidate had won.

a) People are focused on Florida.

b) Florida is a winner-take-all primary, not a caucus.

There was a time when I would have tagged this reply as paranoid. I wrote off the democrats' complaints about the '00 and '04 elections. I am no longer so sanguine.

I must predict that legal challenges will overturn the McCain "victory" at the LA Caucii, as the decision to reslate delegations at great expense & at the last moment was contrary to both the laws of the State & the State GOP rules.

When all the votes were counted Ron Paul was the biggest vote getter (aka winner), so a straw-man "pro-values, pro-family" delegation was carved out of the remnant.

The reason this Caucus is so under-reported would be this niggling fact.

However I predict McCain will win the LA Primary, upcoming.
