One word: FANATACISM.
Seriously. It's now become a joke, but he's referred to tongue-in-cheek by a large portion of the conservative blogosphere as 'The Only Man Who Can Save America'. And WHY is he laughingly called that? Because his supporters call him that, and they're not kidding. There is truth behind the humor.

I am convinced that Ron Paul supporters are a borderline cult.
The bad part is that when he gets annihilated on Election Day these clowns will spend the next 4 years screaming about how the election was rigged and how he really won, blah blah blah .... all I can say is that I am not looking forwards to it lol. |

A few good apples don't make the rotten ones any less so, unfortunately.

What little rationality it present in Ron Paul's policies and supporters is quickly crushed under the sheer weight of stupidity. Kinda like Mike Sparks (Google him).

Because we have been shut out of American political debate since Barry Goldwater. We know we are not going to win this time around. We also know that if the ideal of small government, and the difference between a republic and an empire, is not reintroduced into the American political scene, that the country we love is doomed to death by it's TRUE existential threat ... nope, sorry, it's not tiny, third world nations that lack military or economic power. It's economic collapse. Without our productive capabilities, America really would be in military danger. But we are destroying our nation through debt, through attempting to be somewhere between the policeman and the sugar-daddy of the world, and through regulation which does far more than labor prices to drive jobs out of it, and through a fiat currency which makes rational economic calculation impossible.
We are determined, regardless of personal cost, to return these ideas to the American political debate. If you think about it, a bunch of guys dressed up as Indians and dumping tea into a harbor probably looked pretty silly at the time, especially to those who thought that Independence was a Utopian dream. It is only in retrospect that the importance of what they did became apparent. |

Unlike the "surrender spouting" crowd, who claim that those of us who disagree with the administration's policy on Iraq want to "surrender" or "establish a global caliphate" or whatever, I don't assume that the intent of the people who espouse a policy is the same as what I believe the result of the policy to be. I assume that most disagreements are rational disagreements on complex issues where intelligent people of good will may disagree.
Of course, if I didn't have a strong willingness to "agree to disagree", I wouldn't be much of a Libertarian. I believe that we all have a right to be wrong. The point is that sometimes, silly looking tactics WORK. And in those cases, they may look less silly in the rear-view mirror of history. |
