Romney wins Michigan

Romney wins in Michigan, CNN projects

(CNN) -- Mitt Romney will win the Michigan GOP primary, CNN projects.

"Tonight marks the beginning of a comeback --- a comeback for America," the former Massachusetts governor said.

"Let's take this campaign to South Carolina, and Nevada, and Florida and all over the country. Let's take it all the way to the White House," he said to a cheering crowd.

With 21 percent of precincts reporting, Romney had 40 percent of the vote compared to Arizona Sen. John McCain's 30 percent. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee had 15 percent of the vote, followed by Texas Rep. Ron Paul with 6 percent. Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson had 4 percent, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani trailed with 3 percent.

Huckabee congratulated Romney after his win, but pledged to take South Carolina's January 19 Republican primary.

"It looks like I won Iowa. John McCain won New Hampshire. Mitt Romney won Michigan. But ladies and gentleman, we're going to win South Carolina," Huckabee said.

Some political analysts said Michigan was a must-win for Romney, who finished second in Iowa and New Hampshire.

So can Mitt Romney pick up the momentum he needs to win more states? I have some comments to make about the events of the night, but I'm going to put it off for a couple hours.

I thought Romney starting his speech a minute after McCain, cutting him off, was pre-planned and the cheapest shot I've seen thus far in the Republican race. I think he's strung along Michigan voters on a bunch of false promises, pandering to their hopes.

I think that this is exactly how Rudy Giulianni hoped this race would turn out at this point. He's going into Super Tuesday with no clear Republican front runner, and he's spent his time trying to sew up all of the big states on the line February 5. If he wins a significant number of those primaries, he will be the nominee.

As an aside, as a Democrat Romney isn't anywhere near the top of my "I'm afraid that he could win the Presidency" list. I think that Clinton or Obama beat him. I think it si also interesting that the two candidates who the Republican conservative base like the least, Rudy and John McCain, are the two toughest candidates the Democrats would have to face if they were nominated.

He sounds conservative and looks presidential, and can carry a large part of the Republican base.

Plus he's never said anything that made me think "Oh no."

Good enough for me.

I have a problem with him being Mormon, don’t get me wrong, I like Mormons, we feed the young men on their missions, and give them a safe house to visit when all the other neighbors have chased them from their front porches.

But quite honestly I have a problem with a man who wears plastic underwear running the country.

But what I find completely humorous about this election is all the tip toeing and egg shells everyone is walking on, I mean jeeze, it wasn’t long ago when an American president was getting berated for "not inhaling" and now we have a serious presidential candidate who did lines of coke! I cant wait till each side picks their champion and the gloves come off. It’s gonna be a hoot.

Post Romney and his Mormanism

Some people had a problem with John Kennedy's Catholicism in 1960, and he barely won over Nixon, if indeed he did win. (Cook County, Illinois voting problems) I think the public has shown more resistance to Romney's Mormonism than they ever displayed with Kennedy's Catholicism. Therefore, there may be a problem with whether or not Romney is electable.

I still don't know who to vote for president.

Fortunately for me I'm registered as a democrat and can only vote for democrats in our primary. I'll just vote for some nut like Biden or Kucinich

Romney now needs to win in a state where he has no family ties.

I figured him to win but was hoping he'd lose. Reasons:

I'm against anyone who is prepared to buy the nomination with his own money. I don't care who it is.

He shapes his message to what he thinks Republicans want to hear;

He has adopted a conservative mantle that in the past he distained;

If he loses the nomination, the negative ads he has been running against his Republican opponents will give the Democrats ammunition to attack whoever wins Republican nomination.

On the plus side he looks presidential, is energetic, is smart, and has administrative experience. His religion doesn't bother me in the least.

And you may be right.

I was fired up about Bush in 2004. None of the Republicans fire me up yet. I think I'd be more of a Thompson guy if I thought he wanted me to be.

Romney'll do, and he's not McCain, who I do palpably dislike.

Yes I can. There are several reasons I'm registered as a democrat:

1. I was young, dumb, and full of... well, I was young and dumb.
2. I'm too lazy to change.
3. I get a nice list of things the democratic party wants me to vote for in every single election. I use that as a guide on what NOT to vote for.
4. I get to do my part to disrupt the democrat polling or primaries.

The advantages of registering as a republican:

I like Romney, because he's exactly what a President is supposed to be: an excellent executive. I never bought the knock on him that he'll say anything to get a vote; that's Hillary's game. Romney IS honest.

He changed positions on issues through the years? GOOD! Y'all saying he should refuse to take a re-look at ANYthing?

Also, the guy has it all: class, poise, charm, intelligence, and the ability to choose the best staff. There's not a single thing there to dislike in his perssonal qualities, and anybody that believes the crap the media wants you to think about him is being credulous.

I prefer Fred slightly, only because he's a genuine conservative, and, far from being the negative that the press is trying to sell us, the fact that he's not so hellbent on being President is, if you'd just think about it for a single moment, a HUGE positive. Unless, you know, we'd RATHER choose somebody that will literally sell their soul for the win. Lookin' right at ya, Hillary.
