Huckabee unapologetic for religious tone

What do you think of Huckabee's ads? Good move or bad?

Huckabee unapologetic for religious tone

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee made no apologies Sunday for the religious tone of a recent holiday campaign commercial and said it is important to look for Jesus at this time of year.

"You can find Santa at every mall. You can find discounts in every store," Huckabee said from the pulpit of Cornerstone Church. "But if you mention the name of Jesus, as I found out recently, it upsets the whole world. Forgive me, but I thought that was the point of the whole day."

Huckabee was referring to the ad airing in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina that shows him in a red sweater in front of a Christmas tree as he asks, "Are you about worn out by all the television commercials you've been seeing, mostly about politics? Well, I don't blame you. At this time of year sometimes it's nice to pull aside from all of that and just remember that what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and friends."

"And I hope that you and your friends will have a magnificent Christmas season. And on behalf of all of us, God Bless and Merry Christmas. I'm Mike Huckabee and I approved this message," he says in the spot.

Independent groups have criticized the ad, saying Huckabee went too far mixing politics and religion. Others took exception to the cross-like image created by a white bookcase in the background, describing it as a subliminal message.

Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, has been on the defensive in recent weeks because of the ad and his rise in the polls, particularly in Iowa, where he has taken away the top spot from Republican rival Mitt Romney.

I think it's a stroke of genius.

There are a lot of christians who are fed up with the overly secular nature of the current political climate. Most christians are good people who just "turn the other cheek" and try not to make waves. The few that do make the news are usually crazy people.

Huckabee is a religious man and he's not gonna hide it like he's ashamed of his religion. Who other than christians in the west are afraid to show their beliefs? No one.

He needed to differentiate himself from the rest of the line up. He did exactly that. He had nothing to lose. It's a gamble that worked.

In my humble and misplaced (as I do not live in the US) opinion, religion should stay out of politics. We have seen what it does if it does not.

What if he starts saying things about dinosaurs and science?

Like anything else, man can misuse religion as well. I too am fed up with the P.C. nature of the holidays. This is Christmas the time of year many celebrate the birth of Christ. I am not offended by other religions who practice their beliefs, or no beliefs at all, so I expect others to allow me to celebrate my holidays in return. Christmas is not some new hip thing. Christmas is a centuries old tradition. Christianity always has been closely linked with the U.S. and like it or not, gives the country some moral direction. The unattainable concept of separation of church and state will never exist in the U.S. I for one, appreciate that someone who wants to rule my country is willing to take a stand for what he believes in and I am sure the voters will take this into account when they either vote, or not vote for him when the time comes. Most people do not see religion as much of an issue when voting, but many people are one issue voters and religion is the key.
