Let's see; the original idea of this thread was favorite presidential candidate.

I watched McCain on the Charlie Rose show last night. Iraq, immigration and campaign reform notwithstanding, his passion to take on Social Security reform puts him up at the top for me. Thompson is going to make it a big issue, too. They're my dual choices.

Actually lately I've been re-reading all of my old ASL scenarios.

Another Bush would be too Dynastic - will never happen. Newt just isn't presidential. Keep him as a trusted advisor on Things Conservative.

There was an SF book out about 20 years ago where the US was celebrating its Tri-centenial. The president was picked by lot. I like that. So should the House of Reps. The theory is that someone who doesn't want to be president will be a good one; those who want to be pres become corrupted.

Bad theory.

Then when we attempt to hold him accountable for something he does or is not doing, this will be our response:

"Hey, I didn't want, or ask for, this job. You gave it to me, remember?"

But I guess it's no different than "I'm untouchable because I'm a part of the Executive Branch." Or, that law doesn't apply to be because I'm not a member of the Executive Branch.

I agree Julie. We could end up with a figurehead who brings little in the way of solutions and is top heavy in morality. Worse, a figurehead tends to over-delegate and is easily hoodwinked. Leaders should have positions and a proven ability to lead.
