If Dale gets his wish, I envision the oval office turned into the persian king's/ tent when he tempted the sparten hunchback in the movie 300. Former presidents will be turning in their graves (wondering why they had not done the same thing.)

On reflection it's not a bad system; tends to eliminate most of the drek, but you're right: not much choice in the final election. The primaries offer more choice.

Unless you are a party insider, have the backing/money of special interest groups, or have one hell of a PR campaign, you can kiss your asperations of being a congressmen goodbye.
It's really an elimination contest. The weaker players are culled out. But anyone can run, although party members do have the upper hand.

You can run. All you have to do is get enough registered voters to sign a nominating petition and you go on the primary ballot under whatever party you choose. Then it's up to you to organize a campaign, pick your issues, pepper the media with PRs, and most important raise money. Believe it or not I managed a couple of campaigns for the same guy, and I know how it works.

But your chances won't be good unless you're endorsed by one of the major parties and the local media. Most candidates are people who have been party stalwarts for a long time; but not always. You work for other candidates over the years and finally your turn comes. Or, you have positive name recognition--a successful prosecutor, an astronaut, a ex-general.

Therfore, I would say nearly everyone in congress had his hands in the cookie jar of corruption befor they even got into office.
That's a bit extreme. It takes money to campaign and get your message out; it's as simple as that. It's not corrupt to accept a contribution. In fact, there are relatively few instances where a contribution actually influences a congressman's vote. A big contributor may get access and a personal thank you note, but not much else. But anyone can get access just by calling their congressman and asking for an appointment. It's best to have a specific issue to see him/her about and ask several neigbors to go along. Try it. Also most congressmen have district offices where they spend a lot of time. You can visit them there. Remember. the vote on legislation is either yea or ney, and the constituents back home are watching.

Quote:
That is not the kind of compromising that we need for our leadership. We deserve better.
The kind of compromising I meant was on legislation; not everyone benefits equally from legislation; compromise levels things out so all benefit to some extent.

Oh I forgot, "right and good" isn't your forté Shamus , I'll stick to the evil characters with mental problems in the future, okay?

And as for you glyn, I can only imagine you yearn for the days of draconian teaching methods in public schools and dark sorcery being praticed at the Pentagon - Shame on you both .

Ah, I can see that you have NOT read the final Harry Potter book then! When you have read it, you might care to modify your opinions
