Old Poll - Favorite Republican Candidate

I thought it might be good to add Fred Thompson to the poll now that he's officially in and also the political winds change rapidly. No doubt some people have changed their preference as they've learned more about the various horses in the race.

Would be good to know who has switched candidates since the last poll and why?

I'm still voting Ron Paul. All of the other candidates still do nothing for me. And there's no way I'm stomaching a whole year of Law and Order with Sam Waterson as the D.A.

1. Fred Thompson: reganesque, ultra-conservative, elect-ability

2. Ron Paul: a lot of his stances on social issues are ultra-conservative, and his foreign policy issues (Iraq excepted) are very appealing to me. Lastly, his omni-scient mentality will prove to be useful against the rest of the world (this is the nationalist talking), while this is counter balanced by his anti-unitary executive mentality. Elect-able, and liked by conservatives and liberals.

3. Tom Tancredo: ultra-conservative, but not very elect-able

4. Duncan Hunter: ultra-conservative, but not very elect-able

5. Mit Romney: claims to be Reganesque, elect-ability, executive experience

None of them come very close to being a Reagan, thought Romney has some of the charm. Paul seems ascerbic to me. I don't think he's electable. But his value may be in moving the GOP a little more to the right. He would have trouble with minorities and college age students. You pegged Tancredo and Hunter.

Bumpity.

In honor of FRED! polling Numbah One.

If he doesn't stumble too badly, he's our nominee.

Someone who shall remain nameless unstuffed the ballot box.

...and to Kansas Bear, I put Brownback there because he was on the first poll...seemed only fair when adding a name.

Fred Thompson's biggest opponent is...Arthur Branch.

Arthur Branch is his character in Law & Order.

The public could be used to his character's image on TV that the real Fred Thompson disappoints a public which has high expectations.

I heard that from somewhere...I think from Dick Morris.

What's Dick Morris smoking? There's Reagan, although he wasn't a memorable actor, but then 'hasta la vista baby' is. No trouble getting elected playing themselves, those two. How about Cooter?

Republican Candidates

Seems to me too early to lock in on one candidate. Still lots of time to choose, I would prefer more information and time to observe. The last two years - I have become more frustrated with politicians and the process.

Amen, bellum.

The whole show is obscenely early.

I fully expect the next presidential campaign to kick off the day after the inauguration.

I would gladly support a popular movement that no vote should be cast for anyone who declares his/her candidacy more than 6 months in advance of the election.

Curious

Gday fellas,

Just an Aussie looking on but I wondered why no mention of Newt Gingrich yet.

I know he has not declared his intentions yet, way too early he says.
I have listened to some of his talks and watched some addresses on his web site and he seems to be quite reasonable and switched on with issues such as education and health care.

I know he has had some issues with his personal life, which the media tend to love and the left in particular are almost venimous towards him.

What is you opinion of him and could you imagine a Fred Thompson (Pres), Newt gingrich (vice Pres) team?

I bet that would cause some appopolexy amoungst the Washington chattering classes.

Cheers.
