Was there ever an instance of a benign dictatorship? In olden times it was the monarch, but I'm looking for modern examples.

Benign is probably not the word. Positive, yes, there's been a few. Tito is probably the best example.
Basically a benign dictatorship is impossible for the same reason that an effective "pure" democracy (where all decisions are made with public accountability): Because there are people out there who either disagree with what you're doing, or don't care whether it's right or not, they just want that power. Often it's both, with the former being manipulated by the latter.

And this daletopia sounds good, so long as I get what's coming to me for being in on the ground floor.

In my opinion former President Bill Clinton was one of the worst presidents we had during the 20th century. By the time he left office our economy was falling through the floor and our military was being decimated. President Clinton never took responsibility for anything bad and always took credit for anything good. As far as Hillary Clinton goes, in my opinion she does not care about anyone or anything other than herself. She seems to run her candidacy based on poll results and says whatever she thinks her listeners and supporters want to hear.

One Clinton in the White House was bad enough. Two Clintons in the White House is a very frightening proposition.

This is why I said most. I agree it does take courage to be like Bush and own up and take responsibility equally for the good and bad decision. The general public discourages real leadership because it's not as important to them as it is for the president to do exactly what they want on their particular issue or two of prime interest.
