To you and the authors it might appear extraordinary that the Pashtuns formed into ragtag columns by the Pakistanis fought and fought well too!
To the British or to anyone who has read Indian history, it is not at all extraordinary or surprising.
The Pashtun, because of their hardy terrain and lack of abundant good agricultural land, have through history been preying on the unwary; that is why you have warlords even till today.
The Pashtuns are past masters in guerrilla warfare in the mountains, so its nothing new!
The Pastuns don't have to wear a uniform and sport rank structures on their shoulders. Their tribal hierarchy is adequate to differentiate the "officers" from the "ranks" and possibly even better than our system in maintaining that form!
