The mess that is Iran...OR...

...Why Iran needs nukes Or
...Why Iran needs to be nuked

A brief timeline to its current crisis

*Standard warning/disclaimer : I know just the mention of "oil" would get some spitting "conspiracy theorist" and other such invectives this way, but I am still going to risk this. If you have an extremely disagreeable aversion to this, please stay away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

World War 2 : Britain occupies most of Iran, ostensibly to protect oil supplies to Russia and preventing oil-fields getting into the hands of the Germans. The ruling Shah is forced into exile and his son is put in place by the British forces.
After the war, Britain retains control over Iran's oil through British Anglo-Iran Oil Company.

1951: A democratically elected PM Dr. Mossadeq (yes, they did have a fledgling democracy!!), attempts to nationalise Irans oil assets. He also attemps to institute democratic reforms and limit the absolute power of the Shah, raising the heckles of the British and the Americans.

1953: The rising tension between the Iranian nationalists and the British and Americans culminates in a CIA sponsered coup overthrowing Mossadeq and gives absolute power to the Shah.

The Shah rules with a iron hand, others would call the regime "oppressive". He modernises Irans industry, particulalry its oil industry, at the same time becoming more autocratic by curbing civil liberties. The suppressed Iranian populace, particularly its youth, turns to religion to seek solace.

1979 : A disenfranchised and frustrated population led by religious leaders finally manages to overthrow the Shah's regime, which comes to be known as the Iranian revlution. Unfortunately for the British and the Americans, this means loss of control over oil supplies. The western world only gets to see the Inranian hostage crisis on their TV sets.

1980 : After the loss of Iran, the US begins to support another "strong" leader in the region who goes by the name of "Saddam". The western press touts him as a modern, secular leader (sounds familiar?), standing up to the religious fanatics in the region. Iraq initiates a debilitating 8-year long war which costs a million lives and approximately 1.2 trillion dollars.
