There is one instance where we handed the Iranians a juicy favor: Saddam Hussein and the Taliban were probably at the top of the list of Tehran's security headaches which subsequently frees up Iranian resources to pursue other objectives.

As far as an amphibious landing, Iran is an opponent that has a previous history of employing mines and ASMs. Furthermore, the systemic effects of military activity in the Arabian Gulf and Straits of Hormuz are well known and worth avoiding if the opportunity is there.

A landing on the Iranian coast along the Gulf of Oman or the Arabian Sea would be safe enough but it is awful far from anywhere in that country as near as I can tell.
