India, Russia may sign IPR pact during Mukherjee's visit

Moscow, Nov. 15 (PTI) India and Russia are likely to sign an intellectual property rights (IPR) agreement paving the way for future cooperation in making advanced weapons platforms during the visit of Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee beginning here today.

Mukherjee, who is leading a 17-member high-level defence delegation which includes Defence Secretary Shekhar Dutt and Secretary, Defence Production, K P Singh, would co-chair the session of Indo-Russian Intergovernmental Commission (IRIGC) on military-technical cooperation with his Russian counterpart Sergei Ivanov.

The visit assumes significance with the Russians pressing India on a series of high-technology weapons projects which are on the anvil between the two countries. These include Russians' offer of joint investment in the production of the fifth-generation fighter aircraft and other projects.

According to Indian officials here, a major Russian concern regarding IPR will be addressed successfully during Mukherjee's three-day visit.

"It is hoped that an agreement in this connection can be signed during the visit," officials said.

Indian Ambassador Kanwal Sibal, said agreements reached at the IRIGC session would be important input to the Moscow summit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Russian President Vladimir Putin after three weeks.
