All through WWII US battleships were the state of the art of task force air defense(yesterdays Aegis if you will).

OK Snipe their big guns became obsolete. As you said they were great AA defence but notice how BB production was suspended in 42 and cancelled in 43. No more came down the pike and cheaper AA platforms were built instead.
Notice the contex of my NGF obsolete statement. Obsolete in large scale operations. In small scale ops we cannot carry the amount necessary with the limited amount of planes avaliable.
But even CMC now says he has no problem relying on Air vice gun support until the DD-21 comes on board. If the MC really wanted to bring back BBs for NGF, now would be the time
with a Marine Chairman of the JCS.
